António Costa was born in Lisbon, Portugal 

He is married and has a son and a daughter.

Studies

  • a law degree from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon
  • a post-graduate degree in European studies from Lisbon Catholic University
  • a post-graduate degree in contractual litigation, mediation and arbitration from Lisbon Catholic University

  • member of the Lisbon Municipal Assembly (Assembleia Municipal de Lisboa) (1982-1993)

  • member of the Portuguese Parliament (1991-2004)
  • councillor, Loures Town Hall (vereador, Câmara Municipal de Loures) (1993-1995)

  • president of the Portuguese Socialist Party’s parliamentary group (April 2002-March 2004)

  • mayor of Lisbon (Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Lisboa) (1 August 2007-6 April 2015)
  • member of the Committee of the Regions (2010-2015)
